This exceptional matcha bowl is a signed work by renowned first-class potter Fumiyasu Sugiura (born 1946), created approximately 25 years ago. Featuring an iconic Mount Fuji design against a dramatic black glaze, this piece represents museum-quality Japanese ceramic art from one of Seto's most celebrated contemporary potters, complete with original signed wooden box and artist documentation.

Fumiyasu Sugiura (b. 1946) is the son of first-class potter Yoshiki Sugiura, continuing a distinguished family tradition of ceramic excellence. As a recognized master in his own right, his works are sought after by collectors and tea ceremony practitioners. This piece was created during his mature period, representing refined mastery of his craft.

Iconic Mount Fuji Design:
The bowl features a stunning hand-painted depiction of Mount Fuji, Japan's most sacred mountain and eternal symbol of beauty and spiritual significance. The mountain is rendered in bold, simplified strokes with the iconic peak outlined in cream-white against layers of blue representing the clouds mountain's base and atmospheric perspective. The composition captures Fuji's iconic silhouette with masterful economy of line, embodying the Japanese aesthetic of expressing maximum meaning through minimal elements.

Dramatic Black Glaze:
The exterior is covered in a lustrous black glaze with a distinctive textured surface that catches light beautifully, creating subtle variations and depth. This dark background makes the Mount Fuji motif stand out dramatically, while the glossy finish has an almost lacquer-like quality. The black glaze shows the characteristic iron-rich depth associated with fine Seto ware traditions.

Traditional Seto Ware Craftsmanship:
Seto, located in Aichi Prefecture, is one of Japan's most historic pottery centers with over 1,000 years of ceramic production. Seto ware is known for its technical excellence, refined glazes, and innovation while maintaining traditional values. This bowl exemplifies the region's mastery of glaze chemistry and artistic expression.

Artist Signature and Provenance:
The base features the artist's hand-carved signature, certifying this as an authentic work by Fumiyasu Sugiura. The bowl comes with its original paulownia wood tomobako (storage box) inscribed with the artist's signature and seal, along with documentation of the artist's profile and lineage. This provenance significantly enhances the piece's collectibility and value.

Traditional Chawan Form:
The bowl features the classic matcha chawan silhouette with gently flared walls, a comfortable size for whisking, and a stable footed base. The white porcelain foot ring provides visual contrast against the black exterior and offers a pleasant tactile quality when cradling the bowl during tea ceremony.

Perfect for Tea Ceremony:
The bowl's size, shape, and balance make it ideal for preparing and enjoying matcha in the traditional manner.
