Shigaraki ware originates from Shigaraki Town in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. Renowned as one of Japan’s six oldest kilns, it boasts a rich history that spans over 1,260 years. We travel to Japan, East Asia and other countries to source and handpick the most unique and rare handmade and vintage pieces.

Hechimon is a Shigaraki craftsman's word signifying "windswept things". The unique forms of nature and the individuality of each person. It loosely translates to "unusual things" or "quirky objects," reflecting its emphasis on irregularity, natural beauty, and wabi-sabi aesthetics.

Characteristics of Hechimon Pottery

1. Organic & Asymmetrical Forms – Hechimon pottery often embraces irregular shapes, celebrating imperfection as an art form.
2. Rustic & Earthy Textures – Many pieces showcase rough, unglazed surfaces, crackled glazes, or subtle distortions.
3. Traditional Clay & Firing Techniques – Typically made from Tokoname clay, Hechimon pottery is often wood-fired or high-fired, resulting in natural variations in color and texture.
4. Wabi-Sabi Aesthetic – Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of beauty in imperfection, Hechimon pieces often look aged, weathered, or naturally formed.

Hechimon pieces are sought after by those who appreciate the individuality of handcrafted pottery and the deep cultural traditions of Japanese ceramics.

Disclaimer:
Please note that all vintage items may show signs of age and wear due to their history. These imperfections are part of their charm and authenticity. Handmade items may also include intentional irregularities, which reflect the unique craftsmanship and character of each piece.

We do our best to accurately represent each product in photos; however, due to differences in lighting and screen settings, colors may appear slightly different in person. Please review all photos and descriptions carefully before purchasing. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

Because each item is handmade, dimensions, color, and pattern may vary slightly. No pieces are exactly the same.
