This beautiful handcrafted bowl exemplifies the rustic elegance of Shigaraki ware, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns with over 1,200 years of pottery tradition. Created using the traditional hakeme (brushed slip) technique, this bowl showcases the distinctive aesthetic that makes Shigaraki pottery beloved by ceramic lovers, tea ceremony masters and collectors worldwide.

Authentic Hakeme Technique:
The bowl features the mesmerising hakeme decoration, created by brushing white slip (liquid clay) over the natural stoneware body using coarse straw or bristle brushes. This ancient technique produces the characteristic sweeping spiral patterns visible throughout the interior and flowing horizontal bands on the exterior. Each brushstroke is visible, creating dynamic linear textures that spiral from the center outward, revealing the artist's hand and the organic nature of the craft.

About Shigaraki Ware:
Produced in Shiga Prefecture since the 13th century, Shigaraki pottery is renowned for its natural, rustic beauty and the unique qualities of the local clay. The hakeme technique has been used for centuries to create visual interest while celebrating the simplicity and honesty of materials central to Japanese aesthetic philosophy.

Rich Color Palette:
The color gradation is stunning—a creamy ivory slip contrasts beautifully against the warm brown stoneware body. The rim is finished in a rich chocolate brown glaze that frames the piece elegantly. Natural iron spots peek through the slip, adding authentic character and depth.

Traditional Form:
This versatile bowl features the classic Japanese chawan shape with gently flared sides, a wide comfortable rim, and a sturdy footed base. The raised foot ring, visible in warm terracotta tones with touches of blue-gray from the firing, provides stability and makes the bowl comfortable to hold.

Shigaraki Characteristics:
True to Shigaraki tradition, the bowl displays the natural, earthy qualities the region is famous for: the visible texture of coarse clay, warm earthy tones, and the beautiful interplay between natural clay color and applied slip. The slightly rough, unglazed foot reveals the authentic stoneware body.

Versatile Use:
Perfect for rice, noodles, soup, matcha tea ceremony, serving dishes, or as a decorative art piece. The generous size and traditional shape make it ideal for everyday use or special occasions.
