An authentic Japanese matcha whisk (chasen) handcrafted from a single piece of bamboo. This essential tool for preparing matcha green tea showcases traditional craftsmanship and is perfect for creating smooth, frothy matcha in the authentic style of the Japanese tea ceremony.

About the Chasen:
The chasen is one of the most important tools in the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu or sado). Each whisk is painstakingly handcarved by skilled artisans from a single piece of bamboo, with the process requiring years of training to master. The bamboo is carefully split into numerous delicate tines (prongs) that remain connected at the base, creating the characteristic fan shape.

Traditional Craftsmanship:
Creating a chasen is a meticulous art form passed down through generations. The bamboo must be aged, then carefully split into dozens of fine prongs without breaking. Each tine is individually shaped, curled, and adjusted to create the perfect whisk. The dark threading at the base binds the prongs securely while allowing them to maintain their flexibility and spring.

Handcarved from single piece of natural bamboo
Fine, flexible bamboo tines for optimal whisking
Light bamboo handle with traditional binding
Medium size - fits standard and deeper matcha bowls
Well-aged bamboo with beautiful natural patina
Versatile size for various bowl types

The numerous delicate prongs work together to break up matcha powder clumps and incorporate air, creating the signature smooth, frothy consistency that characterises properly prepared matcha. The flexibility of the tines allows for vigorous whisking without damaging the whisk or your bowl, while the ergonomic handle provides comfortable control.

How to Use:
Warm up the whisk in hot water before each use, this will soften the prongs and make them more flexible. On first use, the middle prongs will open up from the twisted form; this is expected. Sift 1-2 teaspoons of matcha powder into your bowl, add hot water (not boiling - around 70-80°C), then whisk in a rapid W or M motion until frothy. The chasen creates the perfect texture and releases matcha's full flavour and aroma.
